NMSU Deploys VDURA Data Platform to Accelerate AI and HPC Research

New Mexico State University (NMSU) announced the full production deployment of the VDURA Data Platform, live since August 2026. The system supports AI and HPC workloads across the university's research enterprise, which includes over $141 million in annual expenditures. The deployment builds on a strategic partnership formed in August 2025 to co-develop post-quantum cryptographic technology.

PITTSBURGH — September 2, 2026 — VDURA, a provider of high-performance data storage infrastructure, and New Mexico State University (NMSU) have announced that NMSU's new VDURA deployment is complete and in full production. The system, operational since August 2026, provides the university's research community with a high-performance, highly durable data platform designed for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads.

Supporting a Carnegie R1 Research Institution

NMSU achieved Carnegie R1 status in 2025, placing it among the top research universities in the United States. The university supports more than $141 million in annual research expenditures across fields including aerospace, agriculture, cybersecurity, water science, and biomedical research. The VDURA Data Platform now anchors high-performance computing within NMSU's Research Cores Program—a network of shared research facilities, instrumentation, and computational resources—accelerating activities from AI model training to large-scale simulation.

Technical Architecture and Scalability

The deployment combines NVMe flash and high-density HDD capacity in VDURA's mixed-fleet architecture. This configuration delivers flash-level responsiveness for active research data alongside economical bulk capacity, all within a single namespace on the university's InfiniBand fabric. With VDURA's software-defined architecture and subscription model, NMSU can scale capacity and performance as research demands evolve.

Strategic Partnership and Post-Quantum Cryptography

The installation deepens a relationship announced in August 2025, when VDURA and NMSU formed a strategic partnership to co-develop and commercialize post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) technology. That technology is intended to protect petabyte-scale data pipelines behind AI and HPC. With the new system in production, NMSU now runs its research workloads on the same platform architecture at the center of that collaboration.
