UPCEA and MIT Professional Education Jointly Host Advanced Online Learning Leaders Workshop to Promote Data-Driven Strategies in Higher Education
UPCEA and MIT Professional Education announced a collaboration to host the 'Online Learning Data Institute' on the MIT campus on July 28, 2026, aimed at helping Chief Online Learning Officers transform complex data into institutional strategy. This invitation-only event will bring together industry experts to discuss topics such as rankings, benchmarking, and quality assurance.
Washington and Cambridge, July 28, 2026 — Faced with growing pressure to demonstrate outcomes, enhance student experiences, and compete in a data-driven environment, higher education institutions are fostering a new type of leadership: one centered on analytics, benchmarking, and strategic data use.
To support this shift, UPCEA, the association for online and professional education, in partnership with MIT Professional Education, will host the "Institute on Data for Online Learning: An Enterprise Data Workshop for Chief Online Learning Officers" (Online Learning by the Numbers: An Enterprise Data Institute for Chief Online Learning Officers) as apre-conference event of the 2026 Summit for Online Leadership and Administration (SOLAR).
The invitation-only institute will take place on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, bringing together a cohort of Chief Online Learning Officers (COLOs) for an intensive, action-oriented experience designed to help senior leaders translate complex data into institutional strategy.

The Data Institute reflects a broad recognition across higher education: online learning leaders must not only understand data but actively use it to guide program design, resource allocation, and executive communication.
The program brings together expertise from across the online education ecosystem, covering topics such as rankings, benchmarking, student experience, and institutional performance. Participants will engage with thought leaders from organizations including U.S. News & World Report, Quality Matters, the International Distance Education Benchmarking Project (IDEBP), and UPCEA.

The institute is designed to go beyond a traditional pre-conference event, emphasizing peer exchange, applied learning, and strategic reflection. Through expert presentations, panel discussions, and facilitated exercises, participants will develop personalized action plans to strengthen their institutions' data strategies and leadership approaches.
The conference will explore key topics shaping the future of online education, including:
- Methodologies and strategic implications of national online program rankings
- Benchmarking models and operational structures for scalable online enterprises
- Trends in online quality assurance and student experience
- Aligning internal data systems with institutional and external needs
The event will also include informal networking and experiential components, including a campus exploration activity and an evening fireside chat hosted by Dr. Abel Sanchez, Research Scientist in MIT's Data Science program, offering opportunities for deeper connections between participants and the MIT community.
Eligibility for the Data Instituteis limited to Chief Online Learning Officers registered for the 2026 SOLAR conference, underscoring its positioning as a high-level gathering focused on senior decision-makers shaping the future of digital learning.
The institute will take place on July 28, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 7:30 PM, immediately preceding the SOLAR conference.
